Hull Docks - Papper territory.

In court at the Leeds Assizes, crew members gave witness to Brand’s brutality. The boy had been lashed to the forward rail. Hopefully, exposure took his life before the sea. Brand was sentenced to hang. It took the jury only seven minutes to decide his fate. A report on the day in court describes the scene: ‘The prisoner was then removed and as he turned around to descend the steps into the cells beneath the court he was hissed and hooted. On the top of the steps he turned and shook his fist at the audience.’ He was hanged on 23 May 1882.
